Lexus offers a premium class, family sized SUV with a hybrid drivetrain in the RX450h packed with a multitude of trimmings, technology and features.
Of course it comes at a price with the hybrid combined with the top grade sports luxury model worth $108,610.
So is it really something to consider over more affordable or value-for-money SUV on the market?
Exterior
The Lexus RX450h shows off sharp, dynamic features on its standard SUV body. It does stand out on the road, for better or worse.
Strong lines and angles adorn the nose and the tailgate matched nicely with the spiral alloy wheels.
Chromic highlights as a touch of class and the back end is stretched out creating a rather thick C-pillar.
Interior
In the sports luxury grade is a real premium interior with a beige and brown/burgundy upholstery and makes it a lot less boring than the status quo.
The contrast is elegant and everything is leather bound as is expected in a top spec model.
All features and switchgear are neatly presented from the floor console to the analogue clock in the centre and the large display screen is the cherry on top of the dashboard.
A lack of a storage space at the bottom of the centre stack is a minor downside.
The screen isn’t a touchscreen with menu items controlled via the joystick beside the gear shifter but is fiddly and does require some dexterity.
Rear passengers enjoy the comfort of rear air vents and ample legroom.
Features
Lexus never scrimps on the comfort features like rear window blinds, heated/ventilated/powered seats and great conveniences for the driver such as a projected HUD and powered steering wheel adjustment.

Drive and Engine
Some potential buyers may have reservations about the idea of a hybrid thinking there may a certain level of compromise or inferiority to a straight combustion engine.
But I can guarantee you this Lexus hybrid is not lacking in performance. Aside from the initial silence of the ride, most drivers probably wouldn’t notice the difference.
The RX450h takes off quietly in electric mode without the engine sound and can remain so if driven sedately.
If you step down, the V6 engine kicks into gear though the transition is a smooth one while the CVT gearbox also works relatively harmoniously as you move up the speedo.
The whole ride is luxurious and pleasant, stable and relaxing.
With a 193kW/335Nm, 3.5L, V6 engine as part of the hybrid setup, there is the ability to give a bit more punch is called upon.
And of course there’s the benefit of an economical fuel consumption with an excellent 8.0L/100km during the test drive.
Safety
The RX450h has all the best safety components available as standard.
They do however get in the way somewhat being overzealous at time along with the automated warning system for speed cameras and school zones. But fortunately, unlike a back seat driver, they can be switched off.
