Genesis GV80 road test review 2023

Genesis GV80 3.0L DIESEL AWD SUV FRONT grill

GV80 – I recently drove the Genesis GV80 SUV. It comes in a range of engine choices as well as seating styles. The model I drove was the 3.0 litre diesel with six seats and the luxury pack.

This is priced from a little under $120,000 plus the usual costs. Its expensive but actually good value compared to other premium SUV models.

The GV80 is stylish and looks bold and handsome. It cuts an imposing presence on the road.

Inside its luxury and comfort all the way. The list of clever features is almost endless.

The seats are particularly comfortable. Heated and cooled of course, with electric adjustments. Its like a lounge chair for the driver.

Passengers aren’t forgotten, with individualised middle seats also heated and with slide ability.

I had to sit in the third-row seat for a trip into town and found it more comfortable than most others.

The 3.0 Litre diesel engine has more than enough power and torque as well as excellent economy. The 8-speed automatic is smooth and gest the most from the engine.

For something this size it’s a breeze to drive around town. Quiet, comfortable, and luxurious.

I really enjoyed the GV80 and was sad to hand it back. It’s an ideal premium family SUV for those that appreciate a little more quality.

More Genesis GV80 3.0L thoughts

  • For a big SUV it has style and grace
  • Often mistaken for a Bentayga.
  • Its still big though at almost 5m in length
  • Inside the ambience if luxury all the way
  • Front seats are like lounge chairs with massage function.
  • The large central screen has excellent clarity and functionality.
  • There is a heap of space inside.
  • All three rows of seats will comfortably accommodate normal sized adults.
  • When taking passengers, they all seem to want the middle captains’ chairs.
  • Driver information is looked after by the large 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster and 12.0 inch HUD.
  • I’m not really a fan of the rotary dial controls.
  • The six seat Luxury option pack throws everything in the car you could possibly want.
  • Boot space with 4 seats is huge, with 6 seats in use not so much.
  • The engine and transmission combine well for performance and economy. Smooth and powerful.
  • Sometimes the ride from the low profile 22-inch tyres is a little harsh and skittish
  • Don’t let the AWD in the name fool you. This isn’t meant for anything more adventurous than the gravel road to the country estate or snow trips.
  • It feels big in tight suburban shopping centre car parks.
  • Out on the open road though its feel great.

What is not so good?

Also look at.

Large luxury SUVs are popular these days. Genesis GV80 sits between the top end premium brands in price, but not quality, and the larger mainstream brands.

Buyers could look at the Audi Q7, Hyundai Palisade, Volvo XC90, Lexus RX or the Mazda CX-90.

Otherwise there is some more alternative options like the Toyota Granvia, Lexus LM or Kia Carnival.

Genesis GV80 3.0L Final thoughts

I liked the big Genesis. The six-seat version of the GV80 is a luxurious and comfortable place to sit.

With a 3.0L diesel engine and 8 Sp AT it has plenty of power and performance.

While its not really an adventurous AWD it will be great for snow trips etc.

One key factor with all Genesis vehicles is that they are excellent value for money, usual when compared to what you need to pay to buy an equivalent vehicle.

My only real gripe with the GV80 is that its big. It doesn’t look it, but it is. And that can sometimes mean difficulty parking it in tight suburban shopping centre car parks.
